Item Discussion

PURPOSE

The LC-17 Project is in progress and trees have been removed. There were approximately 20 trees reserved for milling. The purpose of this item is for City Council to determine the bench style, quantity of benches to be made and the price point desired.

According to Green Wood Milling, wood can be milled for up to 40 benches. There are three (3) types of benches proposed: Hollow Sheet Metal Base, Concrete Form Base, and Rolled Flat Stock Metal Base. The pricing ranges from $1,000 to $1,800 per bench.

Green Wood Milling is a sawmill that offers a different approach to providing wood products to customers by repurposing wood which includes custom furniture such as benches, tables, chairs and the like. Green Wood Milling has recently completed projects for the Do-seum and more recently for the Witte Museum.

SEE LEON VALLEY

Economic Development - N/A

Environmental Stewardship - Re-purposing of the City trees is part of the City's initiative to reduce, reuse and recycle resources. The benches provide visible proof of the City's goals toward Sustainability and El Verde 2020.

FISCAL IMPACT

Hollow Sheet Metal Base                            $1,800 per bench

Concrete Form Base                            $1,000 per bench

Rolled Flat Stock Metal Base              $1,300 per bench

15 benches at $1,000 = $15,000 (with a 10% discount) = $13,500

20 benches at $1,000 = $20,000 (with a 10% discount) = $18,000

Any orders under 15 benches will only receive a 5% discount

There was $15,000 placed in the FY 16 budget which will cover the cost of milling (not included in the price of the benches) = $9,796

This leaves $5,204 to go toward the creation of the benches. There will need to be a budget adjustment based on the quantity and type of bench selected.

STRATEGIC GOALS

This request directly applies to Strategic Plan Goal #5 "Environmental Sustainability."

It is a sustainable practice to repurpose trees.
