PURPOSE

To provide participation by local youth in municipal government, thereby cultivating leadership skills, facilitating connections to success, and empowering members to serve as the next generation of local decision makers.

 

The MYAC will be responsible for initiatives directed toward Leon Valley youth and will provide positive community impact through organized participation in various city sponsored activities and events. Proposed responsibilities include:

 

              Promoting participation in and understanding of local government by youth

              Assisting with goals set forth in the Mayor’s Monarch Butterfly Pledge

              Assisting with coordination and facilitation of community events, such as               Earthwise Living Day, Arbor Day, and Ciclovía

              Periodically attending City Council meetings, and other Board and Commission               meetings to gain a better understanding of local government operations

              Monitoring municipal programs and Boards /Commissions Agenda topics in               regard to their bearing on youth in the Leon Valley community

              Making recommendations to the Leon Valley City Council relative to programs               and activities affecting youth in the community

              Providing access for comment and input from the youth of the Leon Valley

              community

              Performing other duties as assigned by the Mayor, Leon Valley City Council,               designated staff liaison, and/or City Manage

·                            Assisting City staff with social media presence

·                            Hosting “City Official Day” at respective schools

·                            Assisting with community volunteer outreach

·                            Coordinating and implementing college prep activities for Leon Valley youth

(Ex. Café College workshop)

 

The Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council shall consist of no less than seven (7) and no more than nine (9) youth members; and no less than one (1) adult advisor/City liaison. To be eligible for membership, potential candidates must be at least freshman level students residing within the City of Leon Valley. Should MYAC receive notable interest from younger youth, eligibility may be reevaluated. Applicant criteria shall also include:

 

(1)              Strength of the candidate's application and letter(s) of recommendation

(2)              Schedule and availability of the candidate

(3)              Candidate's willingness to commit the time and effort required to participate in the program

(4)              Candidate's performance in the interview process

 

MYAC applicant outreach will include the following:

 

              Communications via Lion’s Roar, Facebook, Twitter, e-News, and website

              Working with Administrators & Student Body Council at Leon Valley schools

              (School of Science Technology & Discovery and Marshall High School)

              Open Application process (online) to be handled by Community Development               Department

              Applicant interviews will be conducted by a staff committee of three (3) members.               A recommendation will be forwarded to City Council for consideration, approval,               and final selection

 

Appointments to the MYAC shall be made by the City Council whenever vacancies exist.

Social Equity - Supports high-quality education amenities and encourages collaborative participation by Leon Valley residents and stakeholders.

 

Economic Development - Supports the cultivation and sustainability of a healthy economy by developing the community’s next generation of municipal leaders and by providing educational opportunities pertaining to economic development in Leon Valley.

 

Environmental Stewardship - Supports the enhancement of Leon Valley’s environmental sustainability and impact by providing educational opportunities to young stakeholders and future leaders.

A RESOLUTION CREATING A MAYOR’S YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL FOR THE CITY OF LEON VALLEY, TEXAS.

 

 

WHEREAS, it is necessary for the youth of the City of Leon Valley to be active in the government of the City; and

 

WHEREAS, the establishment of a Youth Advisory Council will promote effective communication with and include involvement of young citizens; and

 

WHEREAS, the establishment of a Youth Advisory Council will provide participation by local youth in municipal government, thereby cultivating leadership skills, facilitating connections to success, and empowering members to serve as the next generation of local decision makers; and

 

WHEREAS, members of the Youth Advisory Council will be responsible for initiatives directed toward Leon Valley youth and will provide positive community impact through organized participation in various city sponsored activities and events; and

 

WHEREAS, it is the desire of the City Council of Leon Valley to create and establish a Youth Advisory Council for the City of Leon Valley; NOW THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LEON VALLEY, TEXAS:

 

Section 1. A Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council for the City of Leon Valley is hereby created.

 

Section 2. This resolution is effective immediately upon passage by four (4) affirmative votes; otherwise it is effective on the tenth day after passage hereof.

Community Development Assistant Director Megan McLeod presented this seeking City Council approval of an ordinance creating the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee (MYAC). The MYAC would be responsible for initiatives directed toward Leon Valley youth and will provide positive community impact through organized participation in various city sponsored activities and events.

Council Member Monica Alcocer said this committee should include magnet schools as well.

City Manager Kelly Kuenstler appointed Community Development Assistant Director Megan McLeod to be the liaison to this committee.

A motion was made by Council Member David Jordan and seconded by Council Member Monica Alcocer, to approve of the resolution creating the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee to include magnet schools as presented.
